The National Unity Platform (NUP) has confirmed that Denis Mukiibi, a party member previously reported missing, has resurfaced in police custody at Wandegeya Police Station.
According to NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, party officials visited the station and spoke to Mukiibi, who said he had been interrogated over allegations of “unlawful drilling” and may be added to a case file involving several other NUP supporters and leaders.
Rubongoya named some of those already on the file as Waiswa Mufumbiro, the party deputy spokesperson, Eddie Mutwe, the NUP principal Robert Kyagulanyi's chief bodyguard, Achileo Kivumbi, a bodyguard, Calvin Tasi, aka Bobi Giant, Doreen Kaija, principal of the NUP School of Leadership, and Sauda Madaada.
He said the party believes the arrests and detentions are aimed at keeping its members and leaders away from ongoing and upcoming political activities.
“At the start of the week, our party president, Robert Kyagulanyi, announced that Mukiibi Denis had been abducted,” Rubongoya said.
“He has now resurfaced in police custody, which raises serious concerns about the manner in which he was taken and held.”
NUP maintains that its members are being unfairly targeted and insists they have not committed any crimes.
The party has repeatedly called on security agencies to respect the law and due process when dealing with political actors.
The development adds to growing tension between the opposition party and security authorities, with NUP leaders demanding accountability and transparency over the arrest and detention of their supporters.
